RSVP is in need of 10 volunteers to assist
Follansbee Police
Department
with Pool Parties on July 23,
2011 and August 20, 2011 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.. Volunteers will assist with
RSVP neighborhood watch program in keeping children safe. Special Thanks to volunteers: Jim
Brooks, Bill Kocher, Tom McBride, Maggie Stewart, Mary
Schwertfeger, Mike Mullen and Dr. Carmel Esposito for you
help in making the event a success serving approximately 100
community participants. Thank you City of Follansbee for the

Upcoming Events:
AARP Safe Driving Class Scheduled for Thursday, July 21,
2011 and Friday, July 22, 2011. 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
at West Virginia Northern Community College Room 109.
Also, look for a class to also be held in August. May
be a one day class for prior AARP Safe Driving participants.
Applicants will be accepted on first come first serve basis.

AARP Driver Safety
Program in its ongoing efforts to grow has developed a
working relationship with Retired Educators Ass. that will
run from July 1, 2011 thru August 31, 2011. Anyone
belonging to NRTA can visit
www.aarpvolunteers.com and download the documents. This
is being handled on a national level only and no local SDSP
people have any vouchers. We have been advised to tell our
host agencies about this program. The last week of June,
there will be a blast on the national level. The voucher
will be needed when registering for the class. Any other

Veterans
Focus Group
held their first June meetings at the Brooke County Senior
Center. Future meetings scheduled every two weeks on Tuesday
evenings at 6:30 p.m. Next meeting scheduled for July
5,
2011 at 6:30 p.m. Group’s current focus is assisting
service personnel in adjusting to civilian life after
returning home from active duty and helping families of
service personnel while on active duty.
Help RSVP get
the word out. Special thanks to LTC John
Shaw, Bill Schaefer, Mike Mullen, Jim Brooks and Jim DeMaria and newest members Gary Riggs and Tom McBride. All volunteers welcome to join at any time.

State Wide Senior Corps Project RSVP collecting hotel size toiletries. This can be soap, shampoo,
conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. that will be given
to local shelters and military service personnel. Thank you
for your help. Please continue to collect these items; they
need to be in your local RSVP office by July 30, 2011.
RSVP still looking to partner with Senior
Companions needing volunteers to assist your neighbors.
Guidelines for service are: must be 55, pass a background
check, physical, and meet income guidelines under $21,000
single household and $27,000 double household including
medical deductions. A Senior Companion must commit between
20 – 40 hours per week. Stipend service offers
$2.65/hour and .35 per mile.

RSVP
"ASAP"
held a pot luck picnic on June 8, 2011 at the Follansbee
Park. Students and volunteers were treated to a meal
by parents of the students and RSVP volunteers. A variety of
food was enjoyed by all in attendance and swimming passes
were provided by the City of Follansbee.
A fun filled afternoon was enjoyed by all those in
attendance including a special visit with one of our former students Meile Morris who had moved earlier in the year.
The next evening on June
9th at 5:00 pm the Awards Ceremony was held at
the Brooke
Senior Center for students and their parents. Each student
was awarded a participation certificate and a gift bag
filled with toys and goodies provided by Ms. Mendel. Diana
Mendel the Co-Chairperson for the After School Program awarded
special certificates to students in various categories for
homework participation and behavior. The top students for
homework were Sophia Fields and Zane Morgan. Behavior award
winner received bicycles.
Each volunteer submitted a secret vote for the top boy and
girl who was best behaved through the year. Awards were:
Boy: Zane Gray Girl: McKenna Conaway. Volunteers for the
program provided the students with cake, punch, chips,
veggie tray and other snack items. A fun and excited
evening was enjoyed by all with warm wishes for a happy and
